Ballpoint Study 01: A Tactile Meditation
1991
Medium:
Blue Ballpoint Pen on Paper
Dimensions:
3 x 3.5 inches
Genre/Style:
Surrealism (Free Association)
Description:
As my exploration of ballpoint pen continued, I found it interesting how the face in this drawing involuntarily became an echo of what this piece really is; a meditation, where focus was purely fixed on the mechanics of drawing with ink.
To create shadows with a ballpoint pen, the artist not only has to be congnizant of line spacing, which defines graduations, but also has to be aware of the paper's texture (whether smooth or rough) and the amount of pressure being applied to each line.
This is ultimately where the title for this drawing came from, as a study of sorts; because of the mindfulness that is required to create depth and dimension, using ink (on paper).
