The Repressive Menace
1997

Medium:
Oil on Canvas
Dimensions:
16 x 20 inches
Genre/Style:
Surrealism
Description:
As if the fear of rejection and performance anxieties weren't enough, an even greater threat emerged after an impulsive and unprotected first sexual encounter.
That threat was a potential unplanned pregnancy; an incident that was also compounded by what felt like malice and manipulation, which is why this painting's eerily illuminated subject is wearing nothing but a devious smile.
The Repressive Menace then, is a cautionary tale, produced as a means of catharsis.
Although, this painting now also serves as a reminder of how fragile the path of life really is, and that even one misstep has the potential to alter your trajectory.
