Surrendering Chastity
1994

Medium:
Oil on Canvas
Dimensions:
18 x 24 inches
Genre/Style:
Surrealism
Description:
As a viewing experience, this moment begins with a vigorous gust of wind that lures you in for closer inspection.
However, during the creative process... that gust of wind was a disturbance, a storm I wanted to escape, as I wrestled with the idea of sex and what it means (something I still haven't figured out, even at a ripe old age).
Nonetheless, this painting was cathartically produced through the use of automatism and association. So, even though the imagery here is brimming with implications, that certainly contain substance, you still have to take this painting at face value; not just as a culmination of impressions that needed to be released; but also, as a surface that was pursued for the experience of painting itself; exploring a wound and dressing it, before disarming the disparaging thought through fantasy (which ultimately made me the narrator of this dramatic scene, and not just a character in the story).
