My Compulsive Courtship with False Hope
1994

Medium:
Oil on Canvas Paper
Dimensions:
16 x 20 inches
Genre/Style:
Surrealism
Description:
Unlike much of my early work, which undeniably wrestles with repressed emotional wounds, this painting is a conclusive rational judgment, acknowledging my dysfunctional relationship with infatuation (irrational attachment).
Of course, the infatuation here is also distinctly represented as a "her"; because, "she" is the impetus, after all, and the subject. Although, just as the awkwardly superimposed face on the figure being cradled suggests... the "who" was of less importance than the "what" (a difficult thing to recognize and admit).
The "who" was interchangeable at the time. Which also means that the real "what" was an experience; not necessarily a sexual one, which is the easy conclusion (and purely physical), but an all-encompassing experience that only "she" could provide (as an individual).
Admittedly, this is a complicated subject that doesn't necessarily create the prettiest of pictures (both literally and figuratively). However, where this dark and surreal portrait lacks embellishment (surface), it provides substance instead, in the form of honest introspection and maturation at work.
