Description:

After my first serious relationship ended, I couldn't help but wonder what went wrong. And of course, I could also only speculate or ask questions (as I did here) on canvas, hoping that an honest inquiry would produce answers to something that ultimately seemed unanswerable. After all, I doubt there is ever just one reason that separates two people in-love, even in that final decisive moment of breaking up, which is in all likelihood only the culmination of reasons.

So, rather than try and solve this puzzle, which is of little consequence now, the only reasonable thing to do is to identify the variables involved (as I understand them) and to let each of us tell our own story. After all, in matters of the heart, which require a companion... I can only account for one perspective, my own, which also only ever tells half the story.

So, what I see is a restless couple who is separated from the rest of the crowd by a barrier. We are also tucked away in an uncomfortable embrace, which is suggested by our tangled and rigid form, almost as if we are both aware of something inevitable.

Also, the room we're in is dimly lit, in comparison to the room filled with other people. Although, despite that shadow that permeates us (she and I), her face appears illuminated, as if she has just arrived at a conclusion (though perhaps still remains irresolute).

Whatever is actually happening... she is visibly distracted by something or someone outside of view, either asking you (the veiwer) for help, or perhaps even trying to get my attention, as if we were still sharing a dialogue during the creation of this painting.

Interestingly, the group of people in the other room (the impllied multitudes in the title) actually seem bored, restless and/or ready to leave (which, in hindsight, only seems like an echo of what's happening in the foreground).

So, who are they then?

Are they really "the others" that she yearns to be with?

Or, are they actually only a projection of us, telling the story of our goodbye.
