This piece started as a simple splatter painting.

However, because of the work's elongated aspect ratio and vertical orientation, the image took on more meaning in my mind's eye, suggesting pent-up energy that had just been released and ultimately prompting added details; horizontal bands (that give the impression of a cage) and graduated background colors (moving from darkness to light - inward, out).
