The Balloon
2002

Medium:
Pencil on Paper
Dimensions:
4.5 x 7 inches
Genre/Style:
Surrealism
Description:
The Balloon is a mysterious automatic drawing that seems to raise more questions than it answers. It depicts a surrealistic female figure who appears to be offering someone (we can't see) a balloon, without any further context or clues.
So, is the balloon purely a diversion, to conceal something else that is hidden?
I honestly don't know, because of the process that is Automatism; and, because of how long ago this piece was created. So, the story it tells is honestly as much yours to tell as it is mine, and there are no right or wrong ways of interpreting this piece, which is part of what makes this style of work so fun to analyze.
