Description:
If you've taken the time to explore this Pencil Portrait's description (whether out of genuine interest or some cynical curiosity) I feel inclined to leave you with a jewel, as a reward for your diligence.
Of course, I was proud of this portrait when I created it, as it was the most accurate likeness I'd rendered at the time. However, the real significance of this drawing is what it represents; a wound. Although, the injury caused was not through any direct action of the portrait's subject, as "she" was simply my first major crush, which was unrequited.
In and of itself, this instance alone was not a big deal. But, because this was the first of a long string of rejections endured throughout the next several years, the accumulation had a long unrecognized influence on later interactions with romantic interests, as well as on subsequent artwork.
So, despite the work's triumph in execution, this drawing was a painful reminder of my romantic inadequacies and insecurity, for many years. Although, over time, this piece also became a reminder of our ability to heal ourselves through self-awareness, analysis and having the courage to acknowledge opportunities for growth.
After all, we must find value in ourselves first, before anyone else can, should or will.
For this reason, I have decided to keep this portrait as part of my personal collection; because, even when it's painful... life is so f*ing beautiful.
