Description:
Inverse is a symbolic representation of examining one's self through introspection, our conscious mirror, and was one of my earliest encounters with the complexities of identity.
When this drawing was created, in 1994, conventional "wisdom" still clung to the idea certain behaviors and interests are considered strictly masculine and others that are strictly feminine.
Although, in reality... I never truly believed that our collective consciousness could so inflexibly accept such imaginary limitations; but instead, that the dismissal of established conventions was (and still often is) considered a provocation against authority (which the primitive mind perceives as a threat... even if just to one's ego).
Nonetheless, my sexuality was never in question; only the paradigms that were supposed to define how we fit and function in society. And, to this day, I still have no real understanding of the accepted norms, regarding male and female attributes (aside from the obviousness of biology, of course). I simply know that I am grateful for the capacity to feel and express without boundaries; especially in my work, which is rightfully my domain (a nonbinary exploration of the non-physical world within).
